FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT DRIVERS EDUCATION

Q: WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO TAKE DRIVERS EDUCATION?

A: Your child can take Segment I as early as 14 yrs / 8 mos – provided they attain that age by the first start of the first class. Your child must be 14 yrs / 9 months in order to receive their white driving permit. Students must complete 24 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind the wheel training. Classroom hours are not considered part of the drive schedule-which during the school year will be done between the hours of 2:30-6:30 M-F and Saturday/Sundays.

Once your child has been on the “white learners permit” for a minimum of 3 mo’s and with 30 hours of drive time, they can return to take Segment II - Your son/daughter must be on the white learners permit for a minimum of 6 months as required by the State.

Q: WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE WILL MY CHILD BE DRIVING AND IS IT SAFE?

A: Around Town Driving School owns “full size Taurus vehicles” where you can be assured your child is in one of the safest vehicles on the road. We do not promote the concept of “sport car/race car” to excite your son/daughter. We believe in safety behind the wheel at all times. Our cars are meticulously maintained with monthly service checks on tires, brakes, alignments, oil changes, etc.

Q: DO YOU PICK UP OR DROP OFF STUDENTS AT HOME/SCHOOL?

A: During school hours, we typically will pick up the student from either the old or East high school for their drive time at 2:30. Student’s will almost always drive themselves home at the end of their drive time. When there is a need or special request, Around Town Driving School, will always go the extra mile to try and help out the parent/student with transportation.

Q: WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS EXTRA DRIVING TIME?

A: Not all students learn to drive after 6 hours of required drive time. In the event your child needs additional driving time, Around Town will provide an additional hour of driving at NO COST to the parent (this offer is only valid for students participating in Segment I with Around Town DS). If more than 1 hour is needed, our fee is only $30.00 for a one hour drive session – compared to $50 an hour charged by other driver education providers. We also provide adult drivers education as well, please call our office for cost and available drive schedule.

Q: HOW MANY DRIVERS DO YOU USE?

A: We have 3 driver ed teachers and our drivers are certified by the State and have clean, impeccable driving records. We have taught over 1000 students, all who live in and around the South Lyon Community School district. As mentioned, we live in South Lyon, our kids are recent graduates of South Lyon High School and all the needs of the driving school, i.e. gas, school supplies, pizza, car maintenance, advertising are done through our local SL businesses. We provide discounts to other local businesses who have children needing drivers ed-just mention that you are a business owner!

In addition, Around Town Driving School contributes an estimated 5% of revenue to support school sponsored events, i.e. football boosters, basketball boosters, baseball boosters, swim/dive team and the drama club for South Lyon High and/or South Lyon East -
